  • Know Your Customer (KYC) is a one-time mandatory activity so as to invest in Mutual Fund.
  • Every investor who wishes to invest more than Rs. 50k need to be KYC-complaint.
  • The KYC process that is currently done is called CKYC or Central KYC.
  • Investors who have done their KYC with a equity stock broker for opening a demat account is likely to be already KYC-complaint and might not need to do it again. This means, those who are having an active demat account can likely invest in mutual funds without any additional process.
  • Because there is a In-Person Verification (IPV) column in the KYC form, new KYC investors have to go through some one-time simple paper and offline process. CKYC cannot be done online.
  • The online KYC that most service providers are offering is actually eKYC which is linked to Aadhar and allows only investments up to 50k. Sooner or later, you need to do the regular CYC process. SIPs cannot be started with a eKYC. Even if done, they carry certain restrictions.
  • Unlike as anticipated by many, CKYC is a simple to fill form.
  • CKYC Forms can be downloaded from Mutual Fund Registrar websites or from AMC Website.
  • CKYC, one done with one registrar / AMC, will be valid and applicable to all AMCs. So, doing it once will allow you to invest in any mutual fund.
  • The KYC application form for Individuals is different from those for Non-Individuals. So make sure you download the appropriate form.
